Free image generation APIs: what is real and what is a chat feature
Most “free AI image generation” is a chat box with a picture in it. If you need an endpoint that returns an image URL, the list of real options is much shorter — and worth understanding before you plan a product around it.
Chat is not an API
A free web interface lets you type a prompt and download a result. It usually gives you no key, no automation, no batch generation and no licence to build a service on top. A provider can offer free chat and paid-only image APIs at the same time. Treat a free chat product as evidence of nothing.
Shared quotas are shared
Cloudflare Workers AI is the clearest example: the daily Neuron allowance covers its language, image and audio models together. Image generation is relatively cheap per call, but the same budget also pays for every other request your project makes. Plan the whole application against one allowance, not one feature.
Hosted endpoints come with rate limits
NVIDIA's catalog and similar platforms host image models you can call without owning a GPU. Access is throttled and shared, model availability rotates, and production use is expected to move to a paid or self-hosted deployment.
What the free tier will not give you
- Guaranteed throughput at a given time of day.
- A stable model version: endpoints and model names change.
- Commercial rights you did not read. Output licensing varies by provider and by model.
- Any promise about content moderation decisions.
Why this directory is short on image offers
Image access is easy to claim and hard to document. We list a provider only when its own pages describe free image API access — not when a chat product happens to generate pictures. Two documented options beat ten optimistic ones when you are about to build on them.
